When I began in this field, I believed the goal was not merely to imitate them but to strive to improve upon what they do.


As I advanced professionally, I discovered that there is a more strategic approach to competitive market research, which requires a bit of creativity.


The key is to identify your competitors' weaknesses and ensure your product offers the solution. To uncover these, you can employ various creative methods:


  1. Explore community pages to observe what customers are saying about errors, issues, and limitations.

  2. Search Reddit for unbiased feedback and opinions from anonymous users.

  3. Examine different websites and YouTube channels where independent entities conduct side-by-side comparisons.

  4. Visit G2 (https://www.g2.com) for the latest insights from real-time customers.

  5. Organize discovery and UX research calls with customers currently using or evaluating both product lines.


A prime example of a company excelling in this area is seen in vacuum commercials. Shark, in particular, frequently showcases a side view demonstrating not only superior suction compared to Dyson but also a more competitive price.
