Are C-Suite Leaders AI Experts?

As I was browsing through the documentation of various Identity Providers (IdPs) this evening, I came across a piece that resonated with me and compelled me to read it immediately.
Approximately a year ago, Okta published "AI at Work 2024: A View from the C-Suite", shared through their industry insights:
The article highlights that while C-Suite leaders have a positive outlook on AI (Artificial Intelligence), their understanding of the technology is not as comprehensive. A significant portion (43%) described their grasp of AI as intermediate, while another 37% claimed to have a more advanced understanding. Only 14% assessed themselves as AI experts, which is the highest option.
Given that their AI understanding was considered mediocre less than a year ago, it raises questions about the recent surge in layoffs attributed to AI.
Are we to believe that all these individuals suddenly acquired coursework in this technology and now possess the expertise of the 14%? Do they all believe that AI can replace workers in both the Engineering and Product departments?
If anyone has insights into the latest data on C-Suite leaders and their current understanding of AI in 2025, I would be greatly interested in learning more.
